Artist in Residence - Gemma Rose Brook

Gemma Rose Brook is an emerging Australian painter based in Adelaide, graduating with a Bachelor of Visual Art in 2019 from Adelaide Central School of Art.

She works only from life and is inspired by her experiences and environments. This way of working allows a direct and unique way to immediately record and question the world around her while also connecting to the metaphor of painting from life about life. In this way, her work is a painted journey or diary of these lived experiences.

Gemma was recently awarded the Carclew Fellowship to complete a mentorship with plein air painter Tom Carment and to travel to Sydney to complete career development activities including attending the National Art School. Gemma is also Carclew’s Artist in Residence for 2020 and is currently working towards a Carclew Artist in Residence exhibition. Previously her work was included in multiple group shows including Carclew’s Intrinsic at Adelaide Town Hall, the Adelaide Central School of Art Graduate Exhibition and Keeping the Lights on at Floating Goose Studios.

She was chosen to complete an internship at the Art Gallery of South Australia both in Education and Public programs. Through this Gemma was particularly involved with the coordination of the Neo Teens program but continues to be involved in other aspects of the gallery. This experience has led to her teaching plein air painting and drawing from observation in both community workshops, schools and institutions. She is passionate about this work because of her philosophy of working from life as a way for people to slow down, be present and authentically connect to themselves, their environments and the world around them.
